Press. Switch. Sleep.

A five-minute wind-down for the end of a day on your feet. It asks for a wall, or your other foot, and a pair of socks.

  1. 3 minutes

    Press

Get into bed with your socks on and the lights low. Plant one sole against the footboard or the wall and lean in until the pressure feels strong but good. Hold, shift a little, hold again, so the nubs reach every part of the sole.

  2. 2 minutes

    Switch

Now the other foot. No wall? Press your soles together, or glide one sole over the nub pad on top of the other foot. Use as much pressure as feels good and stop before anything hurts.

  3. All night

    Sleep

Leave the socks on. The heel domes are low and soft, the top is open mesh, and there is no tight cuff. Lights out.

Why the feet, and why at night

Feet carry the day. For people who stand for work, the ache often arrives late, when the shoes come off and there is finally nothing else to pay attention to. A bedtime routine works best when it is short, physical and the same every night, and the feet are an easy place to start: you are already lying down, and they are right there.

Pressing and rubbing your feet feels good and is relaxing[3]. We do not claim more than that. A ritual does not need to treat anything to be worth doing.

Socks and sleep

There is a little research on bed socks. In one small study of six young men sleeping in a cool room, wearing socks was linked with falling asleep about seven and a half minutes sooner and sleeping about 32 minutes longer[1]. Six people is far too few to draw firm conclusions, and the study did not involve any kind of massage sock.

The broader advice is simple and well accepted: keep a regular schedule and a cool, quiet, dark bedroom[2]. If you like socks in bed, pick a loose, breathable pair. More in should you sleep with socks on?

Pairing it with yoga nidra

Yoga nidra is a guided relaxation practised lying still on your back. Many people use a recording at bedtime. The two routines fit together well: start the recording, press your feet for the first few minutes while your attention settles, then let your feet rest and follow the voice.

Why not just a foot rub?

A foot rub from someone else is lovely, and rare. Hands get tired, the other person has their own day to recover from, and the moment you want it most is the moment they are already asleep. The sock takes the hands out of it: the pressure is there every night, for as long as you want it, and you can drift off without taking anything off. If you enjoy rubbing your own feet, our guide to massaging your own feet fits in front of the ritual.

The sock the ritual was built around.

Somnisole puts firm silicone nubs over every zone of the sole, inside a sock thin and breathable enough to sleep in. Made for achy, tired, restless-feeling feet at bedtime.

Somnisole is a wellness product, not a medical device. Not for feet with numbness, open wounds, diabetes-related foot problems or poor circulation without a doctor's OK.

Bedtime questions

Do sleep socks really work?

It depends what you want from them. One small study of six young men in a cool room found that wearing bed socks was linked with falling asleep about seven minutes sooner and sleeping about half an hour longer. That is a tiny study, not proof. What socks reliably do is keep your feet comfortable, and for many people comfortable feet make bedtime easier.

Is it good to wear socks to bed to sleep?

For most people it comes down to comfort. If your feet run cold, socks can help you settle. Choose a loose, breathable pair with no tight cuff, and put on a clean pair each night. If you have diabetes or circulation problems, ask your doctor what is right for your feet.

What kind of socks are best for sleeping?

Thin, breathable and loose at the cuff. Avoid compression socks in bed unless a doctor has told you to wear them overnight. Natural or cellulose fibres that let air through tend to be the most comfortable.

Should you let your feet breathe at night?

If your feet get hot or damp at night, yes: either go barefoot or choose a sock with an open, airy knit. Somnisole uses an open-mesh top for that reason.

Can I add a foot massage or oil to the ritual?

Yes, on the nights you have time. Rub your feet with your hands, with or without a little oil, before you put the socks on. Wipe off any excess first so the socks stay clean.

How does yoga nidra fit in?

Yoga nidra is a guided relaxation done lying still, usually from a recording. Start the recording, press your feet for the first few minutes while you settle, then let your feet go still and follow the guidance.
